There’s always so much of fun and drama in Test cricket, and today we witnessed a whole new level of drama. For a few seconds, the lights went off today at the Adelaide Oval, where the 2nd Test match is being played of the India tour of Australia 2024-25. No harm done, but it was a few moments of complete confusion!
It’s the Adelaide Pink Ball Test and while we’ve seen floodlights go off before in international stadiums across the world, it’s probably the first time you could say that lights went off during a Test match. Usually because Test cricket is always a day affair. And just when the players and umpires were looking at stepping away for a break, the lights resumed.
Adelaide Oval lights go off!
There was no harm done as the lights resumed in less than a minute, but that was enough for the commentators and fans watching from around the world to make some jokes about this incident. This happened twice during the game, and it leads to a lot of questions as to why this happened during this day-night match in Adelaide.
Who’s turning off the lights at the Adelaide Oval?
A) Adelaide is 3rd world.
B) This is the People’s Republic of South Australia, under Beijing’s influence.
C) BCCI’s influence.
D) The lights’ operators are bored of McSweeney. They want him out.#INDvsAUS— Vijay A (@VAAChandran) December 6, 2024
Very momentary, that stoppage in play during the game. India batted first and was bowled out for 180, which they wouldn’t have been pleased about. In the 18th over of the Australian innings, Harshit Rana was running in when this happened. It happened after the second ball of the over, and then again after he bowled the fourth ball.

It must’ve been a frustrating over for Rana, and also the batsmen, as it leads to disruptions in concentration, which is key in the longest format of the game. Take a look at how the crowd immediately started switching on their mobile flashlights and taking advantage of the situation, having fun:
