A couple of decades ago, the World Cup in cricket only meant the traditional 50-over format but as the game has progressed, there are many major International Cricket Council (ICC) global events that take place on a daily basis. There’s the T20 World Cup, the U-19 World Cups, the Women’s World Cups and more. Now, a new ICC event has been launched called the ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup.
Initially approved a couple of years ago, the inaugural edition was meant to take place in 2021 but was postponed a couple of times due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Finally, the first edition managed to take place with the 2023 Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup where 41 T20 games were scheduled between 14-29 Jan 2023, and the host nation being South Africa.
It’s the first time ever that the U-19 women could get a chance to show-off their T20 skills on the global stage and in that inaugural edition, as many as 16 teams were part of the action, divided into 4 groups of 4 teams each. The ICC also announced the next couple of editions with the 2025 one scheduled in Malaysia and the 2027 edition in Bangladesh and Nepal.

Some of the favourites to win the first edition of the Women’s U19 T20 World Cup were Australia U-19, England U-19, India U-19, and New Zealand U-19. Very few teams had players who are also part of the senior national squads like was the case with the Indian side, which was captained by 18-year old opener, Shafali Verma. Wicket-keeper Richa Ghosh was also part of the side, and these two made it count.

Titas Sadhu bowled 2/6 in her 4 overs which laid the foundation for a cheap score and an easy chase for India U-19 in that inaugural tournament. It meant India U-19 came into the 2025 edition as strong favourites, bowling out West Indies U19 for a 40-odd total in their campaign opener and stamping their authority as defending champions in the ICC Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup 2025.
