Winning the toss, Gujarat invited Mumbai to bat first – a decision that soon came back to haunt them. Despite getting rid of Yastika Bhatia (15) early and restricting Mumbai to just 37 in the powerplay, the danger signs were all over the place. Natalie Sciver-Brunt decided to take on Danielle Gibson in the seventh over that cost Gujarat 13 runs. Matthews took on the role of aggressor in the next over adding 15 more runs. With Matthews bringing up her fifty and Sciver-Brunt hitting at over 200, Mumbai went past the century mark scoring 46 runs in just four overs. After a couple of relatively quiet overs, it was back to smash and bang with the batters aggregating 35 runs in just two overs to land Mumbai at 159/1 in 16 overs. With both batters being dismissed for 77, Harmanpreet took the run scoring responsibility adding 36 off just 12 balls to set Gujarat a massive target of 214.
Needing a quick start, Gujarat were dealt a blow in the first over when Beth Mooney edged one to slips. Gibson and Harleen Deol tried to resurrect the innings but the latter was run out in the fifth over. The problems did not end there as Gujarat as Gardner also took the long walk back even before the powerplay, which yielded 46 runs, ended. Just as it appeared that Gujarat might still have a say in the game, Gibson (34) was dismissed to leave her team in a host of trouble. Bharti Fulmali and Phoebe Litchfield kept the scoreboard ticking but with the latter’s dismissal, Gujarat still needed 107 runs off 49 deliveries. While the lower order did contribute some quick runs, Gujarat still fell short by 47 runs as Mumbai set up a repeat of the final from two years ago
